Reasons to Participant Annually in Biometric Screening

Have you participated in the UMED provided Biometric Screening before?  Maybe it was last year or in other years past so you may be wondering, "Why should I participate again?"
If you remember from previous experience, we refer to this process as a "Healthcare Consultation" because that's really the goal of the time we are spending with you - to "consult" with you about your current health, your goals and how we can best support you. Gathering what is referred to as "biometrics" is simply to be able to have data to support the educational material we will give to you both verbally and in print and guide your next steps.  The benefit to you is that our Provider is able to discuss with you the changes from last year in your health status and support you in your continue efforts, new actions, or deciphering the health industry's buzz words and fads.

It's never comfortable having to go into a session where you are going through personal health information with someone that you barely know. Rest assured that our process is to facilitate the exact opposite for you and create an atmosphere that is very comfortable for you. So let's review the reasons why you benefit from signing up for this opportunity again.

Reason #1: Compare YTD Biometric Data

Since you participated last year or maybe a few years past, you will receive updated biometric data and see how your results compare to years' past. Were you able to take the information collected last year at your screen and make small changes throughout the year?  Here is your opportunity to find out how your efforts have paid off!  Did you have the best intentions of putting into action what you learned last year from your Biometric Screen but weren't as successful as you hoped?  Or maybe you weren ready or interested in making any changed last year.  Not to worry! Our team of providers is here to listen and support you in whatever action you want to take from your screening, even if just to provide you with education on your current health status and answer any questions that you might have.  No pressure and never any judgements.

Reason #2: You can prevent unnecessary expenses

75% of health care costs are attributed to chronic conditions that are preventable. Heart disease, for example, can be prevented with proper diet and exercise. In addition, early identification of certain risk factors, such as high cholesterol or blood pressure, can prevent larger problems down the road. This is where biometric screenings are most beneficial. A regular assessment of an individual's health can provide valuable insight on current and potential medical issues, their risk for chronic preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, and can identify strategies for improved health and well-being. Although we are not doing blood work at your screening, we will support you in getting this completed under the direction of your PCP or help you connect with a PCP if you don't already have one.

Reason #3: FREE opportunity to consult with an expert each year
All of our clinicians possess a 4 year degree and complete additional certifications to support their knowledge base. The cost of the services that are being offered to you throughout this process (including the surveys, the screening, the results and the follow up) can range anywhere from $50-100 per person if you were to look to do this on your own. Additionally, you are provided paid time off during the work day to complete the screen! The information provided to you during the brief screen can be invaluable to your health journey whether you consider yourself healthy or not.

Reason #4: Become eligible to participate in the U-First program
Spectrum will be offering a limited number of spots for those eligible employees in the UMED program called U-First. This is a 12 month program focused on physical activity, nutrition and behavior change. Employees wanting to submit their name into the lottery MUST complete the biometric screening process first. This will help determine additional eligibility based upon those results. The cost of this program exceeds $1,400 per person and you can have an opportunity to participate for free!

Reason #5: Walk away with simple action steps
Regardless of whether or not you choose to engage in additional services beyond the biometric screen, you will leave that session with very simple action steps to consider to achieve your goals. This might be tips on healthier eating, exercise or behavior. We can also recommend key referrals to individuals in your area depending on your level of interest such as a community fitness center, nutritionist, physical therapist or behavioral health specialist.

Reason #6: Mindfulness is Everything!
For example: whether we are "rich" or "poor" all of us can benefit from a brief discussion with a financial expert who will undoubtedly tell us something we didn't know. This is the reason we have experts - because we can't know everything. Whether you consider yourself "healthy" or "unhealthy" you will learn something new in this session that will make the time spent very valuable. If we can help you avoid even the smallest of health conditions or injuries even months down the road, then this session is well worth it. Please come with an open mind!
