VO2 Max 6-Minute Walk Test Instructions

The objective of this test is to measure aerobic fitness of seniors, and those not able to perform the step test or VO2 max treadmill test.

To undertake this test you will require: 
  • Measuring Tape 
  • A stop watch 
  • Chairs positioned for rest 
  • Heart rate monitor (optional) 
  • An assistant 
  • Blood Pressure cuff and stethoscope
The VO2 max 6-Minute Walk Test is conducted as follows:
  • Measure out the appropriate distance for your facility, minimum of 20 feet for one lap. (1 lap = length in feet) 
  • Have subject walk as fast as possible covering as much distance as possible for six minutes.
  • Count the number of laps that the subject has walked.
  • Have the subject stop where they are at the end of 6 min. Take their heart rate first, then BP, and then add up the # laps walked, plus measure the remaining distance beyond the last lap walked.
Analysis of the result is by comparing it with the results of the previous tests. It is expected that, with appropriate training between each test, the analysis would indicate an improvement.
