VO2 Max Treadmill Walking Test

The objective of this test is to measure aerobic fitness of the healthy individual that can use a treadmill.
To undertake this test you will require:
  • Treadmill
  • Heart rate monitor (optional)
  • An assistant
The VO2 max Treadmill Walk Test is conducted as follows:
  • Instruct the subject how to walk on the treadmill.
  • Have the subject start walking on the treadmill (0% grade) at his/her own self-selected pace. A brisk walking pace should be selected, between 2.0-4.5 mph.
  • Once the speed is selected, have the subject warm-up at this pace for 4 minutes.
  • At the end of 4 minutes, increase the grade to 5% incline and have the subject continuing walking at that same pace for 4 minutes.
  • During the last minute, obtain a heart rate.
Analysis of the result is by comparing it with the results of the previous tests. It is expected that, with appropriate training between each test, the analysis would indicate an improvement.

Calculation of predicted VO2 max= 15.1+ 21.8 x speed (mph) - 0.327x HR (bpm) - 0.263 x speed x age +0.00505x HR x age + 5.98 x gender (0=female, 1=male)
